Best Big Pit Reels

When it comes to long-distance casting you are going to need a good big pit reel to reach the far side of the lake you are fishing on.

Due to their large spool big pit reels can hold a lot of line and are designed specifically for this purpose.

When it comes to choosing the best big pit reel there are quite a few things that you should be aware of before buying one.

In this guide I will be sharing everything you need to know about big pit reels as well as bringing you my top recommendations.

What Is A Big Pit Reel

If you are relatively new to carp fishing then you may be a little bit confused as to what a big pit carp reel actually is. When it comes to catching big carp you are far better off using a big pit reel than either a baitrunner or a free spool. Big pit reels have their origins in long-casting sea reels and are designed for casting rigs far in to the lake and tackling bigger fish.

Features that separate them from bait runners and free-spools include larger spools, as well as their overall size and strength. The bigger spool means they have much better line lay, this is due to the fact that they oscillate slower when retrieving the line.

To sum up big pit reels are for casting further and catching bigger fish.

Choosing A Big Pit Reel

Before deciding on a big pit reel it is wise to think about what you actually need it to do. For example, there is no point in buying a reel that can hold over 500 yards of line if you are only ever going to be casting a few hundred yards or so. Reels that hold more line tend to cost more so considering these points can save you some money.

Top 6 Best Big Pit Reels

SHIMANO Ultegra

The Shimano Ultegra 14000XTD is one hell of a reel and in my opinion is well worth the price.

One thing about it that anyone who has used it will tell you is that it allows you to cast very far without much effort. It is also very lightweight making it a joy to use.

It comes with a spare spool as well as four line reducers. These allow you to use a variety of mainlines making it a very versatile reel.

Another positive feature is the freespool mode, this allows you to strike and play the fish on the standard drag system. To switch to freespool mode all you have to do is simply turn the hanlde.

Additional features of the Ultegra Big Pit include slow oscillation, Aero Wrap ll and high speed drag. These are all great technologies that help to make this one of my favourite carp reels.

Capable of taking a lot of line and casting long distances the Ultegra Big Pit is definitely worth checking out.

Daiwa Crosscast-S

The Daiwa Crosscast S Reel is another top contender for the best big pit reel. As you might expect it comes with all the bells and whistles that you get with a Daiwa reel.

The Crosscast S has many notable features all of which work well together to make this a great big pit reel. These include the crosswrap line laying system, which cross-wraps the line on the spool. This helps to avoid line dig and also increases the line pick up making long distance casting a doddle.

Then there is the use of Daiwa’s digital gearing system. As many of you Daiwa reel owner’s will know this gearing system optimises speed, torque, and durability. In addition to ensuring that the drive gear and the pinion gear work perfectly together.

With a 5.1:1 gear ratio the Crosscast can reel in 108cm of line with a single turn of the handle, saving you plenty of energy.

In terms of durability this reel is built to last. From the way the line roller is designed to reduce line twist and friction to the corrosion resistant ball bearings, the Crosscast S is definetely worth considering.

Shimano Big Baitrunner XT-B

Up next we have another reel from Shimano and this time its the Shimano Big Baitrunner XT-B.

This reel actually comes in two different sizes. If you are looking for a reel that offers very long distance casting then go with the big one as the medium one isn’t ideal for very large carp lakes.

In terms of features the XT-B is packed full of the high performance Shimano technology. Features include a large AR C spool and the Shimano Aero Wrap line lay system. Together these ensure slow oscillation and top performance when it comes maximum casting distance.

The gears have been designed to increase power transfer and decrease friction. This helps to eliver more torque and winding power meaning you have more control when playing with the fish.

Light in weight and with line reducers included with both the medium and big reels Shimano have delivered the goods with this reel and it truly is a joy to use.

These big pits by Fox are powerful very robust and great for long distance casting.

In terms of line capacity they hold 375m of 34mm line. This is not the most for a big pit reel as some of the more expensive models hold in excess of 500m, but is still more than you will require.

The reel has an impressive gear ratio of 4.5:1, which is great for long distance casting and hauling in big carp fish.

The Pro Cast Spool Lip and excellent line lay of this reel both go a long way in aiding the casting potential of the FOX EOS 12,000.

Another positive feature is the Anti-Backlash system and rotor line guard that helps to prevent tangles.

All in all a great big pit reel and one that offers tremendous value for money.

Wychwood – Riot Big Pit

Wychwood have built a solid reputation for producing excellent reels at affordable prices. The Wychwood Riot Big Pit is a prime example of this and comes recommended as my top choice for the best value big pit reel.

To date it comes in two sizes these are 65S and 75S, with the 75S being the one we are taking a look at.

So what makes this reel so popular with those stepping up to using big reels?

To start off with it has very good casting range and power as well as good line lay. Due to the 5 ball bearings it has smooth line retrieval. Another positive is the cranking power and we have the oversized main shaft to thank for this. Furthermore the anti-twist roller minimises line damage to both mono or braided line.

In terms of aesthetics it combines a modern finish with a wooden handle which I personally find very appealing.

Overall the Wychwood Riot Big Pit is a well-designed reel with very good build quality at a price thsat is hard to ignore. It also comes with a tapered spool.

  • 5+1 bearing
  • Huge cranking power

Leeda Rogue

If you are new to carp fishing and are only just testing the waters to see if it is for you then you may not be too keen on forking out a pretty penny on a top quality reel. With this in mind the Leeda Rogue comes highly recommended.

Offering great value it features a front drag system and is surprisingly smooth on the retrieval, I put this down to the use of 5 + 1 bearings.

In terms of aesthetics the super modern design is very pleasing to the eye and not to be scoffed at.

When it comes to functionality the line lay of this reel is ok and the soft grip handle makes it easy to wind even when your hands are wet.

those that have been fishing for a long time might only find this reel useful as a back up or for stalking around the margins. However, if you aren’t looking to spend too much on a reel I would recommend taking a closer look.

Key Features

  • Front Drag System
  • 5+1 Ball bearings
  • Die-cast power handle
  • Soft touch handle grip
